As we usher in the new year, it's disheartening to observe a surge in aggressive and derogatory comments directed at women online, particularly focusing on their appearance. This trend is not isolated; recent studies indicate a significant rise in online harassment against women. For instance, a survey revealed that 77% of girls and young women faced online harm in the past year.
The motivations behind such behaviour are complex. Psychological research suggests that anonymity and reduced accountability online can lead individuals to express negative emotions they might suppress in face-to-face interactions. This phenomenon, known as deindividuation, results in a loss of self-awareness and a diminished sense of personal responsibility, leading to behaviours that deviate from societal norms.

Moreover, certain personality traits, collectively known as the "Dark Tetrad"—narcissism, Machiavellianism, psychopathy, and sadism—are associated with trolling behaviours. Individuals exhibiting these traits may derive pleasure from causing others distress, a sentiment known as schadenfreude.
It's also noteworthy that some individuals who engage in online harassment are themselves experiencing personal turmoil. In one instance, a woman who posted a negative comment revealed that she was grieving the loss of her son to gang violence. This suggests that personal pain can sometimes manifest as outward aggression towards others.
To combat this pervasive issue, it's crucial to foster a culture of empathy and understanding online. Implementing stricter moderation policies and promoting digital literacy can help mitigate the spread of harmful comments. Additionally, developing automated solutions that detect and address abusive behaviour could serve as a deterrent for potential trolls.
On a personal level, responding to negativity with wit and firmness, as you've done, can be effective in silencing detractors. However, it's essential to prioritize your mental well-being and not allow the negativity of others to diminish your positivity.
